Last Time Trial of the Season

It wasn't pretty but it was a PR, even if by two seconds. 22:27.6 or 21.4 mph for the last Run-Far cycling time trial of the year. Given a side stitch halfway through the course, I'll take the PR. At least this time the handlebars stayed on the bike. ;)

Check this out. "It's also possible that food itself may add to the diaphragm's distress. A meal of less digestible, fatty food before exercising will make the stomach heavier and increase the tugging on the diaphragm."

I guess a double dose of pop tarts and Red Bull fell into that category. I only did it to compensate for the three beers I had at the pub on the way home with some soccer friends, which I agree, was a total disrespect for the sport. I don't even like soccer.

Time Trial Tuesday - July 2007

I almost forgot about the Run-Far time trial tonight. Work piled up and I had a video to download and edit and just happened to glance at the calendar. It hasn't been a normal summer here in Austin and we weren't even close to our normal 100-degree temperature for this time of year. In fact, it was another day of rain that started this morning during my swim. The rain cooled everything off for the day and it never had time to get too steamy. The rain did make for some heavy humidity though.

The unofficial time was 22:29 for a new PR by about 18 seconds. I wanted a little better time but the bottom bracket may need to be looked at. It was grinding the whole ride. No telling whether it slowed anything down or not. It may just need some lube.

I was wondering why my shoulder and knee were creaking and remembered that I hadn't taken any glucosamine in over a month so I'm back to taking that daily. I'm also back to NUUN for hot weather workouts and Accelerade after all workouts. So far just these three products, along with rest and eating regularly have had me ready for the next workout refreshed and no headaches or body aches to speak of.

I still need more time to digest the Tour every day.

Time Trial Tuesday

It was hotter than hell last night for the Run-Far time trial. Actually it was under a 100 degrees which is good for this time of year and hovering around 91, with 55% humidity and winds around 8 mph. If I had waited until 6:45, they calmed down to 0. It still felt really hot out there and it seemed a constant stream of water was pouring off my body.

Good news though as I reached a new PR on the course getting up to an average speed of 21.1 mph. I was really excited last month getting past the 20 mph barrier and now I think I'm just as excited for 21 mph given the heat and wind. I also had some rear derailleur problems. I couldn't get in the upper three sprockets using either chain ring so my cadence suffered at times on the hills. There was also some chain skipping. It's time to replace it. Frankenbike, June 30 is on the calendar for some shopping!

Right off the bat a couple in matching team kits with solid disc wheels passed me on the first descent. It was sort of demoralizing as I felt like I was standing still. However, looking at the results today he came in 3rd overall with an average speed of 27.9 mph and she came in 1st in her division with an average speed of 24.1. At the end of the first half of the course two younger males passed at a pretty good clip. I kept within five bike lengths of the second guy and as we approached the turn where the wind would be at our backs he seemed to have run out of gas. I passed and to my surprise the other guy that had passed earlier was in reach. He too ran out of gas. We were pedaling about 22 - 23 mph at this point with a couple of hills coming up. As hills aren't my strong point and the derailleur wasn't on it's best behavior I didn't quite catch the first guy, crossing the timing mat right behind him by about five seconds.

Time: 22:47.9 (15 seconds better than last month) | Average speed: 21.1 mph

Raul from Run-Far mentioned they are going to two TTs next month.

First Run-Far Bike Time Trial of the Season

Official Results    23:02    20.8 mph

It must've been the pre-race meal of chocolate pop-tarts and orange juice with honey that gave me a little extra zoom-zoom tonight. The hill that usually eats my lunch did so tonight but instead of recovering at the top, I pedaled through it. And surprisingly, I had a little left for the hill at the end of the eight-mile course. The quads burned, but not as bad as in the past.

I sat around afterward, people watched, bike watched and determined I definitely had the cheapest bike on the course tonight. I also was the only one out there with hairy legs. I'll get out the razor next week before the triathlon. Salsa Verde passed many a bike hundreds, if not thousands of dollars more expensive. It was also passed by a few expensive bikes with riders in full team kit, disc wheels and aero helmets.

I'm happy with the results. Two miles per hour faster than last year, yet another year older. I can now feel much better about the winter training and that I'm ready for the Capital of Texas Triathlon on Memorial Day. This season was to be about Kaizen and so far it has with new 5K, 10K, and now a bike TT PR.

Thanks go to Run-Far Racing Services for providing the timing service. It was even owner Raul's 40th birthday tonight and he was out there with the riders. Very cool.
